Japanese Maple- Hard White Dots on Stems.

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6b)

Found small hard white dots on my cut leaf Japanese Maple.
Some have small holes as if they hatched.
Some are fresher looking with no hole in them.
Does anyone know if this is a pest insect or a friendly insect?
Any advice or info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sue

Don't know. I'd post on the Trees and Shrub forum.

The Tree and Shrub forum is accessesed through the Communities header on your home page and requires a subscription which is a very worthwhile. If you have a membership, which is free, but are not a subscriber, consider a subscription. People with all levels of expertise try to answer questions but often the expert advice is easier to find on the forums where the more knowledgeable gardeners hang out. That said, I'd look under Communities to the Insect ID forum and ask Flapdoodle if he recognizes what appears to be egg cases. He's certainly an insect expert.
