Hello-
I would really love to plant 25-50 raspberry plants (both red and black). I am lucky enough to have the space (and I know to plant them far from each other). My question is, what do you think is the best way to get it started, where I can keep the weeds under control and I can mow between the rows? Should I mulch in a long row and plant the appropriate spacing? should I use weed mat for the first year or two to get them going? If I used weed mat wouldn't that hinder future growth? I'm not keen on any boxes/containers as I would really love to have a huge amount of plants, and that seems impractical.
I figure once everything gets started, the weed control won't be as critical, but I'm worried about getting them established. If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts I would welcome them very much. I'm in Buffalo NY, Zone 6a if it helps.
advice on starting a Berry patch
I've seen them planted nicely with wood chips around all the plants which kept the weeds down while not preventing runners from growing up. The chips were rather large and they didn't use landscape fabric. It certainly looked good and was easily maintained. I think, if you want it to all work is to try and build a Bramble Trellis as mentioned in this article: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/1433
