Last year I planted potatoes from seed that I purchased at WalMart. I created a new raised bed the previous fall by filling it half full of top soil and then created a cold compost heap of about 12" on top using dead plants and newspapers that I left all winter. In the spring I sifted out the big chunks and turned it well before planting the potatoes. The plants grew well to about 2 feet and then they all died. When I dug them up, there were lots of tiny white worms (larvae??) the size of a grain of rice. They had chewed the main stem in half about 1/2" to 1" below ground level.
I will plant potatoes in a different bed this year, but what are those larvae and how should I get rid of them so they don't kill what I plant in that place this year?
