Pruning a young apple tree

Milton, Canada

Hello,
Could someone please give me some advice about pruning a young apple tree that will grow healthy but not too tall. I don't necessarily want abundant fruit like the ones you can see on apple farms with thick trunks and tiny branches. I would like it to grow as naturally as possible. There is another apple tree the same age nearby. I tried to label the attached picture as best I could to make it simple for you to give instructions. I live in the Toronto area. Looking for to your replies ... sbs_rmbac

Hello there do you happen to know what root stock the variety is grafted onto? or the variety ? while most apple trees are pruned the same(except for tip bearers) knowing how precocious the variety tends to be will suggest what ultimate height is realistic

Hi Handroanthus, thanks Tor the reply. The plant was given to me. I believe it's an empire Apple.

That tree looks as though it will get large, and I would suggest you train it as central leader as its current form already suggests. You should take a look at this link as it thoroughly address the management for your specific variety of tree and may shed some light on how to effectively train a tree that looks like it will be big. My trees are all on M26 and M27 rootstock, and, as such can be maintained at 8- 10 feet and 5-6 feet respectively. Happy growing
