It's the middle of winter in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and I just found this little guy in our basement washroom. Any idea what species this is?
Spotted in our basement washroom
Looks like a cobweb/comb-footed spider (family Theridiidae) in the genus Steatoda. Some species in this genus may be called 'false widow spiders', and some of these can give a painful (but not dangerous) bite if mishandled - they are not at all aggressive towards humans. When I was a young boy, I was bitten by one when I curiously picked one up that I had found in a window at our house. It made a lasting impression; it was a very long time before I would pick up another spider!
