Although I would have preferred to keep this spider intact a friend was pretty freaked out when leaning against the wood planks and felt the spider jump at his skin. Characteristics of brown recluse? I live in Houston tx.
Possible brown recluse
I cannot see its eye pattern clearly enough to be certain, but given the circumstances under which this spider was encountered, I believe that it would be unlikely for it to be a recluse spider.
Could you explain what are characteristic feeding habits of recluse spiders? Or link a website with helpful info? I observed this same spider pull a stink bug into the cracks of the wood and seemed to be a pretty aggressive hunter.
Recluse spiders usually are found in secluded environments (such as basements, crawl spaces, sheds, etc. that are likely to remain undisturbed for extended periods of time. They usually leave their shelters at night to go hunting - see http://entnemdept.ifas.ufl.edu/creatures/urban/spiders/brown_recluse_spider.htm and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_recluse_spider for more information. The behavior you noted is more like that of a crevice weaver spider in the family Filistatidae - see http://amazingnature.us/spiders/webcrvcwvr1cd.jpg for a typical web and http://www.lilycobrawonderspiders.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/DSC_0905.jpg for an image of a spider in that family.
