indoor palm leaves turning yellow one by one??

Help! I've recently adopted a mature indoor palm and I've had it for about 2 - 3 wks now, but the leaves are turning yellow one by one.

It starts by slowing losing it greenness (over about 3 days) then suddenly it will go very yellow from the centre of the leaf (tips and veins are still somewhat green) and then within a couple of days the leaf will have shriveled up.

It has been in the same location for years and hasn't been recently repotted (that I know of). it came with some dust control/soil stabilization granules but I haven't given any since I've had it as I'm not sure how to use it (eg how much and how often). also when I water it, it drains through and sits at the bottom of the tray its been kept in (also was there when I got it). usually stays there for a few days and when it nearly dries up ( all bar few millimeters) I rewater it as the soil is dry for at least an inch at the top.

What am I doing wrong?

p.s. pics are in the reply section

Looks like a chlorosis. Are you using tapwater? Don't. Don't let water stand at bottom either as it causes a bunch of different issues including infestations and overwatering.
