Found this big fella outside my door... his leg span is about 2 - 2-1/2" anyone happen to know if he's friendly? He currently is positioned in front of a garden spider that's hiding in his web.

It's a wolf spider (family Lycosidae), and active hunter with good (for a spider) eyesight - see http://mamba.bio.uci.edu/~pjbryant/biodiv/spiders/Alopecosa%20kochii/index.htm for an example). Given the chance, either spider likely would kill and eat the other...
