Does anyone anything about or has tryed sowing ginkgo seeds outdoors through winter in a zone 5 climate?
ginkgo trees seed sowing
I haven't tried gingko seeds myself, but Norman Deno recommended soaking them in water for a week, changing the water daily, to help get rid of germination inhibitors. Afterwards, you either can plant them in a pot or place them between damp paper towels as he did. For him, the seeds germinated five to ten weeks after the water treatment when kept at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. He reported that his seeds which received outdoor treatment just rotted.
Last season i had 65 out of 100 seeds that germated. All i did was put the seeds in 4 large planters in an unheated part of my house in mid winter. The temperature hovered between 40 and 30°f for about 5mo. I did keep the soil semi moist. Then the temps made there way to around 65-70 they started to sprout. For this coming growing season i did get more seeds. I did put half outside. The rest i am going to treat like last year. Just curious to see if the seeds can handle a Wisconsin winter.
