What Flying insect is this?

Traralgon, Australia

A week ago we have noticed this insect flying around under our pergola at home. it dose not seem to make any hum or buzzing sound and has not shown any aggression when we have attempted to spray and remove this insect. we suspect a nest or somthing. they gathering around in large numbers 100 or so and keep coming back... thanks for any information regarding the ID or even better, the correct actions into removing this insect from our home.

This is a hover/flower fly in the family Syrphidae, see http://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-hover-fly-family-syrphidae-on-a-daisy-flower-south-coast-of-new-south-19648389.html for a similar specimen. These flies basically are beneficial; the adult flies pollinate many flowers, and the larvae of many species are predators on aphids and other small, soft-bodied insects.

Thank you. I guess we should just leave them alone then.
