Storing banana trees for winter.

Marengo, IN

I have my banana trees trimmed and out of their pots ready to be stored in a cool back room closet inside the house. I read that I should cover the root ball with a plastic trash bag and wrap the stalk with newspaper but am not sure about wrapping the root ball with plastic. I never store bulbs for winter in plastic as they would rot so am concerned about doing so with my banana trees. Shouldn't I use cloth or paper instead? Not sure what to do.

Follow your instincts- is your garage heated? Will the moisture not be cool enough to allow dormancy? The plastic in cool dry air would be fine as it wont rot while that cool. Cardboard or paper is good too. You said back closet- may be too hot for dormancy indoors.

Kittriana has some good points. Also wondering, do you have a cool room with a window, maybe a garage, shop or basement with a window? We live in Canada, and we overwinter the bananas every year in a building that is cool (about 60F), but gets a little sunlight. We keep the plants potted, and cut them back to 2 center leaves in the fall, and the plants are ready to go in the spring.
