8-legged red and black bug in central NY

Can someone identify this bug? I assumed it was a tiny ant until I noticed its two colors and 8 legs. It was found in my bathroom in late September on the wall. Any idea? The photo is an extreme close-up.

This is a jumping spider (family Salticidae). There are at least four genera in the USA that have ant-mimicing species; I believe that yours most likely is in the genus Synemosyna - see https://www.flickr.com/photos/cornellfungi/5762546157 for an example.
