Help! Spent a few days on the lovely Cape Charles, Va. As we bicycled, everywhere we went were clumps of very tall--maybe 2 1/2 to 3 feet purple flowers growing on dark stems. The flowers were interspersed on the stems, not just at the top. Annuals? Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Everyone wishes you had taken pictures to post.
One answer suggests you might have been seeing Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), which is a viciously invasive exotic invader - despite pretty flowers.
