I've grown chard for years and have liked it because it seemed disease and insect free. But this year most of the outer leaves were ruined by brown spots. Today I harvested a sink full of inner good leaves and only encountered 2 earwigs and 1 squash bug. (!?) Any ideas what caused this disaster?
Why did my chard leaves get brown areas?
very likely leaf minor
Thank you Handroanthus. This year I sprayed Spinosad from the time the chard was tiny (had planted seeds in planting trays). I repeated every 2 weeks and when I saw any leaf miner evidence, I either took off the leaf or tore off the damaged bit from large leaves. I've got a nice large miner free harvest of chard.
Me. I cannot see getting sunburn from watering leaves. The damage hasn't found the veins, so probably an external source.
( Had been reading of powdery mildew on basil leaves now found across eastern shores. ) Do you water with a fertilizer? Fertilizer can cause that burn as well.
