Spider I\'d, with limited photo

Satellite Beach, FL

Just want to start by saying I honestly like spiders and whenever possible try and remove spiders with care from my home if found. That being said, I was in my family room on the floor stretching and turned my head to the side and saw a brownish spider a little bigger than a half dollar. It spooked me and was really close to my face so my imediate reaction was to smash it. I have toddler kids in the house so please understand both reasons for my reaction. That being said I will give you some information on my location and that in combination with the best photo I could capture may shed some light on the type of the spider it could be and if any serious risk may exist. I live in east central Florida in Indian Harbour beach. We have been extremely dry for most of the very hot summer but have just recently received some rain. Not flooding but some. I have never seen a spider in our house townhouse before. I haven't noticed problems with many insects at all. If I had to guess I would say that the spider had emerged from underneath our couch. I would appreciate beyond belief any advice or insight into this spider sighting that anyone can provide. Thank you so much.

It's a wolf spider (family Lycosidae). These are active hunters with excellent (for spiders, anyway) eyesight; they do not spin capture webs but actively search for and run down their prey. They are not aggressive towards humans, but may bite should you pick one up carelessly. The bite from a large specimen may be painful, but it is not dangerous.
