I watched this spider cross the road and it was quite large, probably the size of a quarter or larger. Unfortunately I did not get a side shot but from the side, the body stood approximately 3/4 inch high. I'm thinking this is an Orb Weaver, just need confirmation as I've not seen the design on the body before.

It is indeed an orb weaver in the genus Araneus, possibly A. marmoreus, an extremely variable species.
