May I use seeds gathered from old fashioned day lilies right away?

Greenlawn, NY(Zone 7a)

I gathered the seeds from my old fashioned day lilies yesterday. May I plant them in the ground right away or wait until spring? How deep would I plant them and any special preparation, etc. ?
I would appreciate any info and advice that you can offer me.
Hopetolearn.

Daylily seeds have the best germination rates if they are given a cold period before you plant them. You can set them in the fridge for 4-6 weeks. Then, you can plant them in pots, and they will germinate in about 3 weeks at room temperature. If you decide to start this process now, you will need to look after them indoors for the winter, and provide them a sunny window. Probably best to wait until late winter or early spring, start them indoors, and then you can plant them outdoors after the last frost.

I'm not sure if you 'crossed' the flowers yourself, or if nature gets the credit, but here's a video and article about crossing daylilies. It can get really fun!
