Broken Birds Nest Fern

Franklin, MA

So....I *just* purchased a BNF "death row special" from Lowe's for $1.00. And then I cruelly and unintentionally knocked the top clean off of the root base while cleaning the browning leaves off of it. Is there any hope for this thing? I put the top in some potting soil and will keep the leafless root ball potted to see if anything grows from it. I could always go buy another one for $1.00...but then again...what's the fun in that? Thank you to anyone that can provide some insight into this. I'm not finding a whole lot on it in my mad googling.

I give you hope!
Several years ago I planted two variegated East Indian Holly Ferns (Arachniodes simplicior 'Variegata'). I wasn't sure if they were hardy here near Seattle. Sure enough, it got quite cold in December and they were killed to the ground. The next year they did not emerge.
But the year after that they came up. So, some ferns have the ability to come back from roots.

Thank you! Lol, the top is still green. I guess only time will tell if it roots or not. As for the original root ball...I had planned it for a houseplant. Not sure if I can give it two years to grow but I'll hold out as long as I can. I'll update here if anything grows in case anybody else has the same thing happen. One thing I did learn through my research are that birds nest ferns are slow-growing.
