Strange Fly Thing Driving Me Crazy

Clarksville, TN

I'm new to the country side of Tennessee, and there are these fly looking things infesting my house. They come from the garbage disposal and our dishwasher. They are very small, and brown and have stripes on their buts. Everyone I explain this to, says that I have fruit flies, but I've looked at at least a thousand pictures of living and dead fruit flies and I'm telling you, they don't match. They are much smaller than fruit flies and have a more almond shape. Could someone please tell me what they are? I've put up all kinds of fly ribbons, even apple cider vinegar with soap in a cup and they seem to be working very well, but no pun intended, it still bugs me because I can't seem to pinpoint what it is.

For some reason photos didn't upload. Here they are.

This appears to be a fly in the family Phoridae (hump-backed/scuttle flies); they are extremely common and widespread, their larvae (maggots) will develop in just about any kind of decomposing organic matter. Because of this, obtaining full control can be quite difficult. See http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/eh/docs/Specialized/Vector_Management/phoridFlies.pdf for more detailed information.
