Anyone know what this is
It's the remains of a beetle (possibly a ground beetle), lacking its head and prothorax...
Are they common I've not seen one before
Very common. And after examining the images you included in your D-Mail, it also is possible that it is in the family Scarabaeidae, members of which are very common in Britain not to mention world-wide.
