Black flying insect with orange on it\'s back

Halifax, Canada

Hello,

I found this bug in my horse's paddock. I think it might have bitten her this morning as she was very jumpy. I'm thinking she got it with her tail as it was not alive when I found it. Any idea what it is? It was larger than any horsefly I have ever seen, and doesn't have the same look.

Thanks!

It is extremely unlikely that this insect would have bitten your horse, as it is a burying/carrion beetle (family Silphidae) in the genus Nicrophorus - see https://www.flickr.com/photos/44055945@N06/5182364481 for an example. The only animals that they are interested in biting are small dead ones...

Thank you! This looks just like it. I thought she may have been bitten as she was very jumpy this morning, which is extremely out of character, but it must have been something else.
