Planting perennial in bottomless pot in Michigan

I found a wonderful Talavera pot being thrown out because it had no bottom. Rather than trash, though, I considered this a wonderful opportunity to plant a perennial that could survive a Michigan winter. Here's my question though....the pot is about 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Would perennials that die back to the ground be able to re-grow in this situation? They would get some light through the top of the pot, but would that be enough? The spot is pretty sunny, and I can see something whispy and mounded working well, but the plant won't be visible until it's almost 3 feet high! What do you guys think?
