Can someone shine some light on what species this is? Northern Illinois.
Unknown Moth species
What was the approximate wing span of this moth? I want to say that it is a geometrid, but the angle at which the image was taken increases the difficulty of identification...
Unfortunately I don't have that information at the moment. This was a picture sent to me by a close friend. I have never seen one of these before.
Just based off some research, it doesn't look like any other Geometrid from what I can see. (Amateur here) from what I saw online their wings connect to each other all around their body were this one has seperation in its wings and is very angular and has a "tail" like characteristic (his body) Looks like a bat almost in some way. I'm stumped...
Again, the angle at which this photograph makes it very difficult to determine the true shape of the wings; the color pattern on the wings as seen here resembles that of several species of geometers. Without knowing the approximate size of the moth and its geographic location, a positive i.d. may not be possible...
My friend said it was around 3 inches.
Location?
Westmont Illinois, just outside of Chicago. Sorry about late response. Very busy at work.
