Brown spots & dropping leaves on variegated Schefflera

Hello,
My variegated Schefflera has brown spots on the limbs and on some leaves and the leaves are falling off. I have 5 of them planted outside. We have had very little water lately (I live in central FL), could that be the cause? I started watering it nightly, but I haven't seen any improvement.
