Went hiking in the Olympic National Park last week-a temperate Rain Forest.
Here are some photos of a common phenomenon there, this one is Sitka spruce and Western Hemlock trees growing from a downed tree called a nurse log.. This was my first try at panoramic photos with the cell phone, I am not sure how they will come out here. Note the tiny people on extreme far right (red jacket) in the panoramic pic, and in between two behemoths in the other. Second pic shows a different tree, but really illustrates how the seedling grew on top of this stump and roots go down into the ground around the stump.

Nurse Log
For those of you who don't know how to enlarge a photo here, just click on a photo, which gets you into the series of photos, then right click on the photo, then click on "view image" which creates it's own box, then use Ctrl +to enlarge (Ctrl- to reduce), and Ctrl0 to return to normal size.
