Cosmos question

Burnsville, NC(Zone 6b)

I'm asking a question for my sister. She lives near Memphis, TN. She would appreciate any help. Thanks! :)

"I've grown a number of Cosmos this year and some are blooming. But.....I have several that have grown taller than the blooming ones and have not yet bloomed at all. It's so strange, they are growing right beside the blooming ones. Just wondered why. If I remember correctly they really do their thing later in the summer, but I've never had any get this tall and not doing anything."

I have the orange cosmic cosmos and they are blooming like crazy (as always).

I have the pastels and they are tall and are blooming, but nothing like they will as the weather cools. About frost they really be blooming.

If is as hot in TN as it is here in Southern Illinois - I'm guessing they will look something like this about October, but not now. These photo's were taken Oct 11 of 2015.

Thank you Brenda! I just passed on your answer to my sister.

Has anyone else had this issue with their cosmos flowers? TIA! :)

Because cosmos are grown from seed, they can be variable; even ones from a named strain won't all be identical. One of my plants last summer just kept growing and growing without blooming. It branched and branched again, the stem became a trunk, and it kept growing, until the frost eventually killed it. It was 2 metres tall and over a metre wide. It never bloomed. The other plants all behaved normally.

Cosmos flower best in poor soil. If the soil is rich then they grow tall but do not flower as prolifically.
