Spider guarding tear drop shaped pod

San Antonio, TX

Anyone know what this amazing looking spider is? I have never seen anything like it. I didn't know spiders created pods like this. I'm assuming it belongs to the spider since he is guarding it and it looks like it is made of silk strands.

FYI, this spider was on a texas silverado sage bush in my neighbor's yard.

I don't think I did it right. Let's see if the picture posts this time.

It's a jumping spider (family Salticidae), but I doubt that it built that structure. Some jumping spiders do construct silken 'retreats,' but these usually are much lighter in structure, and are open at both ends. See http://www.oocities.org/brisbane_spiders/images/wpeC1.jpg for an example.
