Question for a friend. He doesn't have a lot of space as he lives in an apartment block, but he wants to grow his own organic vegetables. Is it possible to do this in pots on a balcony.? He's grown tomatoes in a tomato growing soil sack, but now he'd like to grow peas, broccoli, cabbage etc.
Can I grow vegetables in a pot.?
Peas, broccoli, cabbage are cool weather plants. A 5 gal pot will provide for 1 plant, like a sack. Potatoes are normally planted in the Spring like tomato and squash, tho in Idaho the taters are late summer plantings and have sprinklers going even in the snow.Taters will grow in straw as well, if there is dirt enough for the eye to root.
When I lived in an apartment building I grew beans on the balcony. They were in a long shallow (read: not ideal) flower container and trained on a mesh attached to the balcony above me. The effect was to have a wall of solid green and it was wonderful.
If tomatoes were successful, he must have a good amount of sun. Peas might be nice. Broccoli and cabbage are both large plants so he won't get much- they aren't like tomatoes in that with tomatoes you get many individual fruit over a few months time. More like watching one thing grow for months, then get one head of broccoli (OK maybe some side ones following) or one head of cabbage then it's done. Peppers should do as well as tomatoes given a long enough warm season.
Fantastic, thank you. I'll let him know your thoughts.
