I'm in the South of England and just wondering what seeds I could save from my food and plant at home (indoors or on balcony) that has a chance of growing.
I keep saving seeds with the intention of just planting them all and seeing for myself but I haven't got round to it because of the fact that I don't know, which makes me think I won't waste my time. So I have lots of orange and lemon pips saved, which obviously need hot climates, but I've read that they can still be grown here with care.
Peppers and tomatoes grow here but I'm not sure how it works with just saving the seeds from shop bought food, is there a difference between saved seeds from food, and purposely sold fruit and veg seeds?
And any ideas on seeds I can save and grow? I don't have a garden, just a balcony but happy to keep things inside too.
Many thanks, much appreciated.
What fruit or veg seeds can I keep and grow from supermarket food?
Here in the USA- it depends first on where the fruits/veggies were purchased. Groc stores like to irradiate the produce before they are shown. Kinda messes up seed viability - and garlic bulbs sometimes won't grow. Other than that, produce at a farmers market doesn't have those issues.
No sense growing what you won't eat if your space is limited, but my green onions, and garlic cloves that sprout - always go out to the garden as weather cools. A ripe tomato may not give you the tomato you ate- unless it was an heirloom (because most store bought tomatoes are hybrid crosses and may not come true). Peppers must be ripe and not green for mature seeds. Squashes, cantaloupes, melons, pumpkins, again depends on if they were a hybrid cross to fruit true to what you expect. Potatoes- fingerlings, and like baby corn in your salad- is a harvesting technique, not what those eyes will give you! Herbs can root in water, and give you pleasant aromas in your windowsill. Rosemary is said to make you stay young!
Green onions are regrown by leaving the root an the lower part of the bulb, plant after drying a day, to finger deep, and they will grow again.
Seasons speed the growth when Spring, slow the plants when Fall. Fun journeys to your seeds and best wishes!
