2016 Summer/fall Gardens

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

was talking with dad about it last night, he thinks i may have went a bit too heavy on the water. well at least i got this one big sucker, lol. instead of eating it, i think i will save it for sprouting. If over watering was truly the issue then that is something that would inspire me to take note on that and try again next time.

It's interesting that others besides me have one plant that gives them trouble. Mine is radishes. Everyone can grow radishes, right? I'm not everyone. For example, I planted four varieties of radishes this spring, about 32 seeds. I got about 4 edible Easter Egg radishes out of that. Oh the other plants grew well but most of the roots remained thin and never developed a bulge, while the peppers, eggplants and tomatoes next to them were doing splendidly. Then I tried growing them in pots with about the same results. Sigh.

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

i found out the hard way myself several years ago that radishes like growing in colder conditions than tomatoes or peppers would find comfortable. like "not cold enough to layer up like an eskimo, but still needing a sweatshirt" type of cold. but then again radishes can be funky about those roots as well, lol. They say that radishes arent supposed to be super spicy or that means there was something going on they werent particularly fond of. well no matter how much pampering i give them--even though the roots may look pretty, they end up being like little fireballs every time, LOL.

Try a radish called Red Satin. Seems to grow any time of the year here. Harris Seeds has it.

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

took advantage of the cooler cloudy day to get the cabbage plants in the ground, and you can see some smaller cabbage sprouts growing in between them

Lol Maypoplaurel ,I got a new cell phone and took pictures for the first time and I downloaded them with my post but they did not come through at all , I tried twice . Will have to ask one of the kids to help me with the pictures.

Lol without our kids we would be lost....

There is a new thread on this forum about peppers. I don't have an answer but maybe somebody else does. Since the upgrade the number of views doesn't show up, so it seems like nobody is looking. Thanks!

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

i am totally stumped concerning that pepper.

It looks like this freakishly hot start to the fall has made some of my carrots try to start bolting (we are normally in the low 70's by now, but we have been stubbornly stuck in high 80s and 90's). If i pinched off those flower stalks, seeing as they are only a few inches tall at the moment, would that temporarily stop the bolting process until things cool down, or are those too far gone and would just send up another flower stalk? we are supposed to get our normal cooler temperatures back starting tomorrow.

Still picking tomatoes, okra, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and four varieties of cowpeas. Just brought these in from the garden.

that is fantastic.
I just removed all my okra and long beans.
Direct seed lettuce this week and carrots.
My kale and cabbages transplants are just great.
I think I will harvest all my kale this week ... they are huge already.
Eggplants and peppers are loaded with fruits/
I am waiting on PEANUTS, which it is the first time I ever planted them.
I think I need to wait until they will turn brown and then i pull them.

Peanuts should be fun. I love to make spicy boiled peanuts in a slow cooker using raw peanuts in the shell.

I picked cowpeas and lima beans today and dried okra pods for seed saving. We've had a very dry summer which is continuing into fall. It's rained once in three and a half weeks. With no rain relief in sight it's senseless to plan much of a fall garden since I'm not always here to water. Greens tend to self sow so there should be some cool weather surprises.

Here some of my last harvest.
The kale basket is from yesterday.

good looking stuff there. and sweet looking kitty too ;)

my kale has been coming along pretty decent as well. starting to see some roots fattening up on my turnips, and i have radish sprouts popping up now. Im hoping that this extended period of warm weather will not cause anything to bolt

I blanched the kale very quickly then sautee' and served with a miso/sake/mirin marinated salmon ... yummy !

Tia, my daughter and I are planting garlic, we want to plant about 40,000 cloves, we are about 3/4 done-- planted two rows today before I got too old...Now planting Chesnok Red a nice variety -- if we could just keep the deer out ... cabbage is ready for kraut, jerusalem artichokes are still in flower.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

40,000! Wow! Wouldn't that be about 5,000 heads? I like Chesnok and also Music. We wait until after Thanksgiving for cold enough weather to plant.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

40000 wooowww
My planting date for garlic will be October 30th (dark moon).
Perfect, since I will fly back from Singapore on the 27th !

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

wow, the vampires will stay away from your place for sure, lol :)

Erwin, TN(Zone 7a)

Last year we planted about 30,000
but sales have been good so, we plan to plant a few more this season .
Normal planting time here is October, but -we have so many to plant we start a little early. We have to have everything planted and watered in by November first-- that is when the irrigation water in our area is turned off.

Erwin, TN(Zone 7a)

We got 2 more rows planted, before I got too old,
cabbage is growing impatient waiting for the end of garlic planting.

I just got back from Asia and I had big surprise in my garden.

first small batch of "Black nebula" carrots, and one little lonely "Snow white" carrot in the middle, lol.

I dont think i will be growing the black carrots anymore though, they are quite a deceiving variety! While they are in the ground, those shoulders will trick you into thinking they are big enough to be pulled, but then when you yank them out you find that they taper off at the end too quickly. And these suckers bleed just like beets, LOL! definitely a good juicing / soup carrot.

How do they taste?

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

to be honest, i have to ask: "What taste?" lol! pretty disappointing that they barely have any flavor at all, i was mostly drawn in by the health benefit claims, which i dont doubt, but it appears that breeding the health benefits in was at the expense of the taste. Not even the dog wants one, LOL! Well i will find some way to blend them into meals so that they are at least not wasted.

Erwin, TN(Zone 7a)

Deep purple carrot grows well for us,- and tastes great any way we serve it-.not extremely juicy,[about average] but the juice is fantastic.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

I m trying carrots again this year ... so far my carrots look just like yours
Wish me luck

Cascade, VA(Zone 7a)

i still have a lot of them in the ground, im going to leave them there as long as possible and not judge by size on when to pick them, see if that makes any difference. I believe our freakish extended heat has something to do with the lack of taste. like the seasons just dont know that they need to switch, lol. im actually surprised that none of my fall crops have bolted...yet!

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Leave some until spring & see what happens. We did last year & they were good yet in spring.

are you saying that your carrots survived your cold winter?

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Of course, carrots are a biennial. Meaning they grow the plant the first year & flower & produce seed the second year.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I leave all of mine in 'til spring. Otherwise they are small and not sweet. We can only grow short varieties in the heavy clay soil here anyway but they fatten up come spring.
