I have recently started my old garden beds up and have covered them in FRESH horse and cow manure. I'm worried after reading up that I will now have parasites and fly larvae etc. I don't plan to plant out for another 8-10 weeks. Do I need to cover beds in plastic to kill these nasties ???
Composting manure
Flies can smell manure from a mile away. Are these already composted? It is usually only fresh manure that is a problem. Horse manure I use 50% manure to 50% regular dirt, same would be for cows that are beef cattle, and I have no issues with flies in that case. Cow manure from a dairy lot is really stinky and higher in nutrients, so green manure from a dairy would need more dirt, and time to compost. Thoroughly. And dairy manure does draw flies whengreen.
