Oddly flat oval purple berries

Newport, NH(Zone 5a)

I have been working on a woodland garden trail for about 3-4 years, and have never seen these odd little berries. They are sort of flat, oval shaped, and purple. They are in an area where I have grapes growing, but the grapes are still green. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tiffies

Can you get pix of the plant they were on- the leaves, the way they attach to the stem?

I think those are without question fruit from one of your local viburnum species, of which there are probably a handful native to New Hampshire. I suspect Arrowwood Viburnum (Viburnum dentatum) or one of its several relatives.

That's a great species to have around for flower, fruit, and fall color - not to mention a bird magnet for summer forage.

You should take pictures of the plant(s) these fruit came from. Show the whole plant first, and then progressively detailed images of the component leaves, twigs, branches, trunk, buds, seeds as attached, etc.

Good find...

I don't know what plant they came from. One day they were just there, all over the ground. I did try looking for large bushes, or trees that still had the same fruit on them, but didn't see any at all. I will look for arrowwood viburnum, but from what I've found, the arrowwood has clusters of flowers, and it's a bush. I haven't seen any bush like plants with clusters of flowers, but will keep looking. I thought they might be from a vine that has become a pain in the butt to control.
