I am looking for suggestion of perennial plants that do well in almost total shade. I have used pachysandra with success. Is there anything to add either colored foliage or flowers? I am in zone 5a. I am beginning a garden and need low maintenance plants as I am older with limited mobility using friends to do the actual planting and upkeep, so I don't want to abuse their kindness.
Shade garden
Some suggestions, low maintenance plants for full shade. I have all of these and think they would work in your zone too:
Epimedium pinnatum ssp colchicum small bright yellow flowers in Spring, spreads slowly Some newer (pretty) Epimedium are less drought-tolerant.
Geranium phaeum 'Lily Lovell' dark purple flowers, variegated leaves
Geranium x cantabrigiense ‘St. Ola’ white flowers
Geranium macrorrhizum ‘White Ness’ white flowers
Hellebore Winter Jewels strain, 'Golden Sunrise' late winter-spring yellow flowers!
Bergenia 'Pink Dragonfly' and 'Bressingham White'
Tiarella 'Sugar and Spice'
You might try Bluestone Perennials in Ohio, they mail order nice plants, and the website has a nice search function for zone, sun-shade etc.

Woodland phlox, Creeping Jenny, Jasmine, Pink Princess shrub.. These are growing under trees.. Not getting any water.. And doing fine.
