I didn't see this myself - one of my former student's parents asked me what I thought it was. The thing is a monster!

It's a female stag beetle in the genus Lucanus; likely Lucanus elaphus (giant stag beetle). See http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek080601.html
