Brown Recluse??

Parker, CO

Hello Friends! I just moved into a new house in which the basement was full of boxes when I looked at the property. On my first night here, I turned the light on in the basement and saw a spider that I am 99.9% sure was a brown recluse. I live in Colorado and know they are not indigenous to this area, but have history with them from growing up in the Midwest. I found several webs in the basement behind baseboards and such, which is absolutely their M.O. Can any of you help me identify these one way or the other? Thank you!

You really need to get a picture of the spider itself; there are other spiders that may construct their webs in situations such as you describe...

Thanks, Flapdoodle! Do you happen to know if there are any brown recluse look-a-likes that also make those type of webs?

There are some agelenids that can be of a similar size and shape, but they all have markings of some kind (usually bands/stripes) on their legs or bodies, whereas recluse spiders have unbanded legs and the the only marking on their body is the so-called 'violin' on their cephalothorax - see http://www.orkin.com/other/spiders/brown-recluse-spiders/
If you were farther south, you might encounter the southern house spider, in which the male also has a vaguely violin-shaped marking, but it has other characters that serve to differentiate it from recluse spiders.

Thank you SO much, Flapdoodle!! The one I squished is all bunched up, so I don't believe I'd be able to tell if there are stripes on the legs or not. But there was definitely the violin shape on the back.....so that, coupled with the webs in the basement, lead me to believe this is indeed a brown recluse!

I found one in a web! Please take a look at pics and let me know your thoughts! Thanks!!

This appears to be one of the funnel weavers in the family Agelenidae; harmless to humans - http://bspm.agsci.colostate.edu/files/2013/03/Funnel-Weaver-Spiders1.pdf

Oh my goodness!! Really?!? So you don't think it's a brown recluse??

IMHO, it definitely is not a brown recluse...

I agree with Flapdoodle, after seeing many, many, many, brown recluse's, I don't think this is one. I'm sure I could easily go move a few boxes right now and find one in a closet. We have learned to respectfully watch for them since they are so common to our area.
