ID this guy found in carpet?

Found this little guy (part of him, anyway) in my carpet.

What you see is about the size of a coffee bean.

Looks like part of him might have gotten torn away. Top and bottom views posted.

We live in Northern California, in the San Francisco Bay Area if that helps.

Can anyone ID?

It's a headless scarab beetle of some kind; not a carpet pest, just an accidental 'visitor'...
