Insects found in house - can\'t identify

Elyria, OH

Hi All, we have a rental duplex in NE Ohio, today June 26 we lifted up our doggy's water and dish mat and found about 50-100 of these tiny gray/clear bugs under the mat, under the linoleum tile, and between the tiles and the wooden painted baseboards. Most are tiny, less than 1 mm length, some are as big as a 2-3 mm max, such as the attached pictures, they're hard to photograph because they move quickly in bursts. No visible wings, no segmented body, long antenna, any idea as to what these are? Thanks ~JV

These are springtails, primitive arthropods in the order Collembola. They are closely related to true insects (older texts still place them in the class Insecta) and are harmless nuisance pests that feed on bits of decomposing organic matter.
