what is killing my dahlias and how to fix

Moscow, ID

I have around 40 dahlias this year in various beds and various types of soil. The sickest dahlias are in the best soil. Something is turning the buds and tops of them black along with some of the leaves. Here are some pics. Can anybody help me save these dahlias?

If you live in a humid climate, you might want to look into verticillium wilt, which sometimes can turn leaves black.

Dear Audrey, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I live in the Pacific Northwest which is listed as a place that has this problem. It has attacked at least 10 of my brand new dinner plate dahlias! And Only my dahlias. I have grown Dahlias for the past 4 years without any problems except earwigs. It doesn't make sense to me that it all of a sudden it has appeared. The soil is different in each place it has appeared. Anyway I will try my hardest to save my dahlias as I enter them in the fair each year. Here are some of last years winners. THAN YOU AGAIN!
