Hi all; I would like to plant something that can become an archway leading to my front gate. I'm in zone 8, on the Oregon coast, about 500 feet from the ocean. Any suggestions for hardy evergreen shrubs that can be trained or cut into an archway type thing? Thanks!
Suggestions for \"archway\" shrub
I have seen a beautiful archway made of 10 ft italian cypress planted along each side of a wide walkway and pulled together at the tops. The only downside is it has to be pruned to keep its shape. But, it was lovely and dramatic. =)
Hi kathy__bee; I wish we had the room for something like that!
There are several selections of Ilex crenata that are fastigiate (narrow) that could be trained like mentioned above. 'Sky Pencil' is one that is pretty commonly grown.
Thank you for that suggestion ViburnumValley; that looks interesting and there are several nurseries in Oregon that sell it.
Good luck with your idea.
