rose of sharon.

Last spring I planted a 4' rose of Sharon shrub in my lakeshore garden." Lake Michigan " within a few days ALL of its leaves dropped. I thought it died. But before I got a chance to pull it out I noticed new growth. And it turned out nice for a first year plant. This spring now being mid June its now just putting out new spring growth. That's way later than everything else in the area. Are they temp sensitive, is it normal for them to be this late?

Is this the Hibiscus species Rose of Sharon? The growth you are describing is completely normal for the Hibiscus I am familiar with.

This year I did better than other years with just waiting for my Hibiscus. I have Hibiscus laevis growing among my Ohio Spiderwort, and a cultivar hardy hibiscus. Because the cultivar was even later than my native, secretly hoping it was a goner but it sent out its shoots about two weeks later.

This year was an odd one for many of my plants because of the milder winter, but the native Hibiscus started around the same time it always does, early May. I suspect yours was just waiting for the soil to warm up to its liking before breaking dormancy.

Did yours bloom last year? I planted my natives in 2012, but didn't get any flowers until 2014. They were tiny things when I got them, unlike your 4 foot plant.

It is a hibiscus type. It did flower. But the spot its in is a little microenvironment. Even just 5 miles away it averages about 10 to 15° warmer. It seems to be picking up its pace now. Was just wondering if its normal for them. Thanks for your response!
