My daughter caught these on a family trip into a wet area near Boston. Is it possible to ID these creepy things?

Look like might be something in the family Nymphalidae - can you get an image with better lighting?
These look vaguely like checkerspot caterpillars - see http://joyce-road.blogspot.com/2015/06/baltimore-checkerspot-caterpillar.html for an example - but the plant you show does not look like their typical host...
Baltimore Checkerspots are common around here. It's probably as good a guess as any.
