Brooklyn, NY

Hi DG. We lost a japanese maple after transplanting, and now this recently planted one is developing some brown edges and spots a few dead leaves. Can anyone identify problem and suggest how to treat it? Many thanks..

krvs - I got into Red Maples last year as a neighbor of ours that we look after has a huge one near his house that propagates seeds/seedlings all over his yard - thousands of them. They were just being mowed down along with his grass so I started pulling the tender little trees just as they popped up in the spring and went through some learning curves along the way to getting them to take hold in the greenhouse and begin to thrive. One thing I noticed is that it is easy to over-water them. When they get too much water the outer edges of the leaves turn brown and slowly the die-off spreads inward on the leave eventually curling them up. Once I learned a bit more about watering, in other words, let the soil have SLIGHT dampness when the finger is pushed about an inch into it, the trees turned around and began pushing out new healthy shoots within a week. The roots don't like to be water-logged. They need the oxygen as well as the moisture in order for the tree to flourish. Over-watering is an easy thing to do for a plant that you're trying to get started. Try just giving them a little less attention with the hose and see if you don't see an improvement. It worked for all of my Red Maples. ; )

We don't get much rain here in central Michigan, but, this small 3 yr. old Japanese maple doesn't want to thrive.
