Hello
My question: How do I prevent algae growth in the water that sits in the overflow trays of my outside potted plants?
I live in the DESERT in the Southwest U.S. It gets over 100 degrees during the summer. In order to keep my sun-loving [potted] plants alive while I am at work, I water them every morning until their soil is saturated and water overflows into the overflow tray. [I know this is the amount of water they need, as the trays and soil are dry by the next morning]
So, How do I prevent algae growth in the water that sits in the overflow trays of my outside potted plants? Obviously it would have to be safe for my plants.
Is there such a miracle cure?

Clean the trays periodically? Or put a few drops of bleach in the tray or enough to kill the algae.
