Was wanting to raise this Caterpillar until it becomes a butterfly or moth four my kids to see. Found it the wildflower garden at my job. I tried to id it but kept seeing cabbage worm or something like that. As far as i know there is nothing in the cabbage family in the garden. I'm not sure what the plant i found out on is called but none of the leaves were eaten. Any help would be appreciated but if i can't figure out what it is i will return it where i found it. Located in salina kansas zone 6a. Hopefully the pictures can be useful for someone to id it.

This is a looper caterpillar in the family Noctuidae; possibly that of a straight-lined looper moth - http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/species.php?hodges=8899
Great thanks for the help. The kids will love watching it do its thing and now ot wont be eating the plants in the garden
What will you feed the caterpillar? In some cases (I do not know if all) caterpillars eat the type of plant its eggs were laid on. I found this out last year when I wanted to feed the Black Swallowtail larvae I found on the fading dill. I had plenty of their native host plant, but ended up having to make an emergency run to the nursery to get dill.
If it is a native wildflower garden at work hopefully the plants are not being sprayed with chemicals and insects allowed to eat from them. Doing a search, one of the host plants for this species is Meadow Rue (Thalictrum spp,)
