I have about a half grown bull frog hanging around my pond. Should I be concerned? I have a few small fish? Is he likely to eat them at all? I really love him and hopes he sticks around but I don't want him to be a threat!!!
Thanks!
Dawn
Bullfrog and koi pond
Hi Dawn,
Sorry no one else has answered you yet. I started to respond to your question yesterday, but had some trouble with my computer in the midst of it and ended up doing a full system scan...sigh
I know you love your Bullfrog so I wish I could give you more reassuring news. Unfortunately, Bullfrogs have voracious appetites and are known to eat insects, birds, rodents and, yes, fish.
There's a lot of info available on the internet about Bullfrogs. It might help you decide what to do.
Sorry...I wish I could be more help.
From someone that just buried my best friend.. My African Bull Frog.. Bubba.. 12 years.. Yeah.. They will eat anything.. Remove him from the area.. Create a space for him/her.. That won't let the frog intrude into the koi pond.. BUT you will have to provide fish, small pieces of chicken, ( and when he gets big.. fuzzy mice). Being a person that has reptiles, and has had a few frogs....It just comes down to how much you love this frog..

I am just now reading your message snake watcher! So sorry your bull frog passed! I enjoyed seeing mine hang around but after a few days he ventured off. We have a creek nearby so I assume he went back to the creek! Thank you for posting!
We had a bullfrog that stayed near our pond for a couple of seasons, and he may have taken some very small fry, but the other fish (who were about 2" long and up) did not seem to be bothered. We have lots of insects around the yard, so the frog may have felt it was easier to go after them than to pursue the fish!
Just now reading this post and surprised by all the worry about frogs. Part of what I love about my small 600 gal. pond is the presence and sounds of the frogs. Especially in the spring when their busy with noisily attracting mates. 3 to 4 big bull frogs and several green frogs hang around the pond all season. If I had fry smaller than 1 1/2 - 2 inches I might be concerned but I wouldn't enjoy my pond as much without frogs. I watch from my porch in the evenings as they leave the pond and venture out into the flower beds in search of food. Some hop across the patio, out across the yard to an area under our security light. I expect their after bugs that fall from the light above. One year I noticed the silence of their song and wondered where have all the frogs gone, till I saw the black snake weaving his way through the pond plants. With the help of my husband, that snake didn't last long. Where my pond is concerned "The only good snake is a dead one"
