Found this in garden. Do i need to get rid before it does any damage? Red head and body with black wings

This is a soldier/leather-winged beetle (family Cantharidae) in the genus Cantharis - see http://www.commanster.eu/commanster/Insects/Beetles/SpBeetles/Cantharis.flavilabris.jpg for an example. These either are predators on other small arthropods or pollen feeders; they are not pests that need to be controlled.
