I found several of these between a window and screen. A handful died from not getting out. Would they have hibernated in the siding? I was able to encourage a few outside, so some survived. I only posted the dead one in case it helps with identification.
They are small wasps, maybe at the most an inch, counting the antennae.
I am thinking it may be an Eumeninae, possibly Ancistrocerus. I hesitate to get to species level since there are so many insects that look similar. Did I get close?
Thank you so much for any help.
CLOSED: Mason/Potter Wasp? In Central Iowa
This does indeed appear to be in the subfamily Eumeninae, and it looks to me more like an Ancistrocerus than any of the other genera in North America. However, I would be extremely reluctant to hazard a specific identification. As for hibernation, all references that I have found on this state that the females overwinter in their nests (males do not overwinter).
I appreciate the reply. I am glad I was able to let a few go and I keep checking for more.
