I am clearing an overgrown easement that has a bunch of Buckthorn, White Mulberry, Boxelder, Silver Maple, Virginia Creeper, and Poison Ivy. I came across this tree/shrub and I can't quite figure out what it is. The leaves are opposite and look like a Maple, but the stem has a ridge.
Tree/Shrub Identification
As you found on the other forum, this is a Viburnum - and likely either Viburnum trilobum (native) or Viburnum opulus (introduced exotic).
If you were to clip off a stem or two, and take some extreme closeup pictures of the leaf petioles (top and bottom), then a more definitive ID might be possible.
These two species can hybridize, so final absolute ID may be out of reach. At least it is not Buckthorn or White Mulberry...
