Fungus or insect?

Chapel Hill, NC

I have many of these evergreens in my yard. They are turning brown from the inside out. I have been told that this is due to a fungus and I should apply copper fungicide. I have also been told it is due to an insect and I should apply and insecticide. Thoughts? Thanks for the help!

There are quite a few diseases associated with the types of needled conifers that you've shown here. Your first task should be positive identification of each plant, and then the disease (or possible insect), and then proper regimen of treatment - which could be cultural OR via some sort of pesticide.

I invite you to post images of your various plants over at the Plant Identification forum, where there are many bright participants who will assist with the ID as well as likely provide knowledge about treatment for your plants' travails.

Your first two images appear to be a small tree. I think that is one of the common Chamaecyparis sp. selections, maybe something like 'Gracilis'.

Your second two images appear to one of the groundcover types of Juniperus. I used to know what all these were, back in the days when I planted these sorts of species for various projects. Ah, the memory...

Anyway. Suffice to say that you need thorough information, starting from:

**Plant identity
**Plant pest (disease, insect, or cultural conditions)
**Plant treatment

I hope you find a simple resolution soon. Much help can be found here, and at your local county Cooperative Extension Service.
