What is this spider?

South Elgin, IL

Hi guys,

I noticed this guy after he dropped down in front of my face then climbed back up. I noticed he was struggling to crawl across the ceiling, and eventually made it over to the door. I went up to get a cup and a paper plate to help him outside but he was gone.

Any info would be appreciated!

This is a cellar spider in the family Pholcidae. They usually make their rather messy webs in dark, out-of-the-way places such as basements, under sinks, etc. where their prey often includes other spiders. They are completely harmless to humans.

Neat looking spider, I don't see many of his kind around the house. I mainly just see the little yellowish/tan ones, or plump little black ones doing their own thing in the corner.

Thank you for the details, I appreciate it.
